All members of the public should be aware that stroke is a medical emergency. The public needs to recognize the signs of stroke, know FAST (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) acronym, know how to seek medical attention and the need to respond immediately by calling 9-1-1 or local emergency number.

Stroke prevention includes primary and secondary prevention of stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA). Primary prevention focuses on the prevention of an initial stroke and/or TIA. Secondary stroke prevention focuses on the prevention of a recurrent stroke and TIA across the stroke continuum of care.

Healthcare providers work with patients and families to identify risk factors, agree on goals for prevention of a stroke, and implement appropriate management strategies.
